Exercise in a workplace Sitting for a whole day working, you are physically inactive

How many steps does the average American walk per day? According to studies, the average adult American walks between 5,000 and 7,000 steps per day. It's even worse when you sit at work for the majority of the day, making only about 2,000 steps. Moreover, seated work increases the risk of cardiovascular diseases and back problems, as maintaining correct posture continuously at a desk is challenging.

What constitutes an adequate daily step count for healthy physical activity? Is 7,000 enough, or will 5,000 suffice? The often-promoted goal is 10,000 steps. Initially, there was no research to support "Why 10,000?" It's a round number that’s easy to remember, but does it suffice for minimum activity levels? Many jobs do not require physical movement, and by the time you are home, you might be too tired or lack the time to achieve 10,000 steps. Furthermore, walking alone won't significantly improve your body's strength, muscle mass, oxygen capacity, or flexibility.

What to do to care for health?

If you have spare time, sports like tennis, swimming, cycling, rowing, and golf are beneficial. Yet, the modern lifestyle often leaves little room for such activities. Assess your physical condition. Are you fit and strong enough for sports? Sitting for long periods diminishes muscle mass and strength, and walking alone does not suffice to build muscle or enhance flexibility. However, sometimes inspiration like the film "Widowmaker" can motivate regular exercise.

For those bound to their desks, consider what long-term effects this might have on your body and how much you could be doing for your health beyond achieving a 10,000 step count with a trendy new watch.

What kind of training is the best?

Effective training varies and should include cardio, strength, fitness, and stretching. Engaging multiple muscle groups through a variety of exercises maximizes the benefits. Consider this: time is a precious commodity, especially in highly developed countries. Still, health is invaluable. Despite being a busy professional in my sixties and the owner of a company that sells multifunctional training equipment globally, prioritizing physical activity has been crucial for my health and longevity.

Watch my exemplary workout

Recent research in the American Heart Association journal Circulation suggests that adults who engage in physical activities two to four times the recommended amount significantly reduce their risk of premature death. Thus, a shorter high-intensity workout or a longer moderate-intensity routine is ideal. Maintaining good health requires consistent effort and smart lifestyle choices, which include regular physical activity to help manage risks of various diseases, and improve sleep, endurance, and even your sex life. Where to exercise when you don’t have time?

Finding an efficient workout location is crucial when time is scarce. Options include setting up a home gym or utilizing a gym/fitness studio at work.

Workplace exercises

Imagine the benefits of having a gym at your workplace, especially for professions like law or business, where long hours are spent seated. This not only benefits you but also your employees, enhancing their health, productivity, and mental well-being.

Many professions require above-average strength and fitness

Professions like soldiers or firefighters require superior physical fitness and health. A gym within their unit supports these needs, encouraging regular exercise crucial for their demanding roles.

In other workplaces, instilling a culture of fitness can start with those already passionate about fitness, demonstrating the benefits of regular physical activity during or outside work hours.

Stand up and do some exercises

Even small firms, such as law offices with their own gym facilities, can benefit from dividing workout sessions into shorter segments incorporating various types of exercises. This flexibility allows employees to exercise without needing special attire.

Wake up call

A holistic approach to workplace well-being is essential. Employers should actively break down barriers to enable employees to engage in regular physical activities, safeguarding against health risks and preparing better for future challenges.
